Marine and Offshore Applications
In an offshore environment, you rely on your compressed gas systems - with our unparalleled system reliability and maintainability, your business will reach new horizons with Wittig.
A combination of unique design features and engineering refinement delivers real advantages for customers including; reduced energy consumption, increased uptime, lower total cost, and the sheer reliability of gas delivery.
- Liquid natural gas (LNG) is natural gas cooled to liquid form, making it safer for storage and shipping overseas.
- Natural evaporation occurs in LNG, this is known as boil-off.
- Wittig compressors are designed to process boil-off gas in an energy efficient manner.
Boil Off Gas
Environmental regulations will not allow heavy oil as a fuel for shipping when close to coastlines. The alternatives are marine diesel or liquified natural gas. As LNG is the cheaper option, it is widely relied on by many marine and offshore vessels.
By liquifying natural gas, it allows it to be transported more easily across vast distances in a safe and cost effective manner. However, maintaining and storing LNG presents its own challenges.
LNG is kept in storage tanks as a cryogenic liquid at temperatures of approximately -165°C, which is close to vaporisation temperature. Despite tank insulation, even a small amount of heat will cause natural evaporation of the cargo. This is known as boil-off gas. This gas is then compressed by a BOG compressor and fed through to the ship's engines.
This video above provides more detail about how BOG is produced and processed by Wittig compressors in offshore applications.
Solutions you can rely on!
For many decades Wittig has designed and manufactured an impressive range of high performance, long lasting and reliable vacuum pumps and compressors for both air and gas applications, making Wittig products the first choice where reliability and efficiency are critical requirements.
Based on many years of experience in a wide variety of applications, we have now designed and launched our BOG compressors for marine applications. With these compressors, international shipping is entering a new era of environmentally friendly drive technology through LNG systems. Having already proven their abilities, the Wittig BOG compressors are part of the world's first LNG driven cruise ship, transporting thousands of passengers across the oceans day after day.
Wittig ROW Marine Compressors
Designed for BOG applications, our ROW series is available in a variety of sizes with volume flow from 200 to 3,000 m3/h and with discharge pressures from 3 to 15 bar(a). They are the most compact compressors available, occupying just 2.9m2 of floor space and just 5.39m3 volumetric space.
Marine & Offshore Applications
• LNG/BOG engine systems
• LNG tankers
• FPSO/VOC recovers
• Gas handling
